Before the Monday, January 27 class:
Read through this introductory chapter of Ellen Rosewell's Introduction to Arts Administration. Take special note of the different subcategories that she lists on pages 4-5.
Afterwards, pick one of the articles included in the New York Times's The Big Idea: Why Does Art Matter? and read through it.
Write a short (1 - 1.5 double-spaced page) reflection. Are you currently drawn to any of the subcategories that Rosewell lists? What in your life has drawn you to that subcategory? What drew you to the NY Times article that you picked? What struck you most about it? Can you fit it into one of Rosewell's subcategories?
(SCSU students get free membership to the NY Times through our Library. Learn how to get access HERE, and ask Gabi for help if you need it! They also created THIS RESOURCE to help get you started.)
This is a site that lists many of the Arts-based nonprofits in New Haven.
Includes job descriptions and the overall structure of the NHSO.
Before the Monday, February 3 class, read this article and answer these questions on the reading.
Also, contact your midterm organization (attach my letter and CC me, please!) and have them respond back that they understand in the affirmative.
Before the Wednesday, February 5 class:
Complete this SCAVENGER HUNT (or spend at least 30 minutes on it) on an NHSO budget forecast and 990.
Note: this link will force you to make your own copy of the scavenger hunt so you can save it into your own folder and make your own edits. You'll also need THIS FOLDER that has the two documents needed to answer the questions (our 990 and financial overviews for FYs 2019-2022).
Answer these questions to help you reflect on the experience.
Charity's list of information that you can find on a 990. (Note: not necessarily in the correct order).
Before the Monday, February 10 class: Your choice! Both of them detail the intricate relationship between an Artistic Director and an Executive Director. If you listen to the podcase, fill out THIS FORM afterwards. If you read the article, fill out THIS FORM afterwards.

This article corresponds with the Wednesday, February 19 class. Before class on Wednesday, read the article and answer these questions on the reading. (Include any questions in pre-week reflection). I've picked this article NOT to point fingers or blame, but rather for reflection on how important it is for Board members to ask great questions, and roll up their sleeves when things get tough.
Watch this TED talk for the Wednesday, February 26 class and answer these questions.
Watch this TED talk for Monday, March 3 class and answer these questions.
Two things for Monday, March 10 class (then answer these questions):
Read this slide and see if you can think of an example of each of these three ways of interacting with a community in an artform of your choice (i.e. how would an orchestra or dance company or theater interact with their communities in each of these three ways?)
You should listen/watch from between 18:00 - 37:15ish. This conversation took place in the fall of 2020. Elm City LIT fest is an annual literary festival built around literature in the African diaspora. During the pandemic, they created a podcast with several Black authors/poets/creatives from across the state. This episode featured Juanita and Josh from CulturedAF, a now-New-Haven-but-then-New London-based nonprofit centered around artists of color and the LGBTQ community.
These articles correspond with the Wednesday, March 12 class. YOUR CHOICE of which one you'd rather read. If you read the Audrey Bergauer/Orchestra X article, fill out THIS FORM afterwards. If you read the Museum Branding article, fill out THIS FORM afterwards. Also, snap a screen shot of an ad that catches your attention, OR take a screenshot of a specific brand that comes to mind that is one of your favorites (even if they don't pop up on your targeted ads).
Audrey revolutionized the California Symphony over about 5 years. Along the way, she did research to share with the field on how to create a more audience-centric experience (which became its own type of marketing).
OR
Read a more traditional view on branding-in-action that looks at several museums across the country and how they designed an experience even before their patrons stepped foot through their doors.
Before the Monday, March 24 class, read the following articles (then answer these questions):
This is a Facebook post (unsubstantiated!) from someone who works in "the industry" and knew several people who gave him insights into what went into the Superbowl halftime show. For our purposes, let's assume that everything is true.
A little over a decade ago, people were looking forward to the newest Broadway musical about Spiderman. It became the butt of many late night jokes and ultimately failed miserably. Read more about the behind-the-scenes of it in this article.
Read before Wednesday, March 26 class [More than a Skim, but Less than a Detailed Read Through]. Afterwards, answer these questions.
